One of the things that makes Tolkien's Middle-Earth so real is that he kept adding layer after layer of details... little things. Everyone mentions the invented languages of course, but also who else has characters in a story that wonder if they'll ever be characters in a story? Attention to detail has got to be the professor's signature talent.
volvo s40The movie (Or FOTR at least) is very different from the books in many details. But of all the changes that PJ&Co made to the Fellowship to get it to fit on the movie screen and to make it popular enough to pay for itself... there's one thing that they didn't change at all. They followed the professor's example and put an incredible amount of effort into all the little things that make Middle-Earth so real.
Here is a list of our favorite little things about the movie, contributed by its most devoted fans. -- Idril
- Ok, my favorite little things (taken from the 78-page press notes I got for writing my review): more than 900 suits of real, hand-made armor, more than 2,000 rubber and safety weapons, more than 100 real, hand-made weapons, more than 20,000 individual household and everyday items handmade by artisans, and more than 1,600 pairs of prosthetic feet and ears, individually sized and shaped. -- neebleneeble
- Sauron's armor was scary. -- Balrogface
- Isildur's theme. -- susdi3
- Elvish. -- vampirekitty969
- Elrond blinking at the arrow narrowly missing him. -- AvEtUw

- Elrond blinking as an arrow whizzes right by his head. -- Idril
- The whole elf archery thing - can't wait for Helm's Deep. -- sovaysovay
- Young Elrond. God exists (in the form of young Elrond) GRROOWL -- vampirekitty969
- In theng battle scene where the 'good guys' line up to fight the 'bad guys'...as the 'bad guys' reach the line of 'good guys' the ones in front do this totally awesome chain reaction (think Radio City Music Hall Rocketts) with these scyth-like blade weapons! -- Dernhelm1
- My very favorite scene was in the beginning of the movie how orcs kept falling by the volley of humans' arrows, the music on that part. Then comes that very best scene with those Noldor-like elves in bronze armor shooting in straight line, and not in the volley, and then they draw those scythe-swords and decimate the foul creatures:-))))epic battles I adore so much:) -- GnihaR
- Elves in bright armor. -- Idril
- Gil-galad. I thought he wasn't in the prologue at all until I saw a picture of him on a movie shot website. He's a hottie! If you know what to look for you can see him in the movie. He's in two very quick flashes. His blue armor and crown are just as detailed as Elrond and Isuldur's costumes. All that work for 1.5 seconds of film. Amazing. -- IdrilCelebrindal
- Elves in armor -- vampirekitty969
- In theng, I love Elrond's armor and the way he looks up when Sauron appears. -- FooluvaTook
- A cool part was at the beginning when Sauron was blowing all those warriors away with his new power -- Nataku2LOTR

- As Gandalf approaches Hobbiton, he is singing the "Road goes ever on and on..." -- FooluvaTook
- Gandalf and Bilbo singing "The road goes on and on" as they travel. -- Idril
- Facial expressions must be something I notice, for I also loved Gandalf's. Especially when he first came into Hobbiton, and Frodo announced cheekily, "You're late!" Gandalf replies to the effect that a wizard is never early nor late, but arrives precisely when needed - and then we watch his stern expression start to quiver and wobble, and his eyes start to twinkle, and suddenly they are *both* laughing out loud, joyful in their reunion. I just LOVED that! -- Erin
- Frodo smiling at the beginning of the film when he sees Gandalf. (So few smiles left after he took on the Ring). -- Norgara

- The Proudfeet were funny. (Those were the grumpy hobbits that tried to stare Gandalf down.) -- Idril (& Bunnie who knew they were the Proudfeet and not the S-B's)

- I loved the homey clutter of Bag End, and could almost smell the warm scents of old paper and book bindings. One felt invited to come in, find a corner under a sunlit window, and there simply curl up with a cup of tea, and read until your chin nodded to your chest. -- Erin

- The reaction when Bilbo says "...I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve..." is just perfect, just how the book describes it... -- ButSam2680
- In the entryway (of Bag End) there's a long row of wooden coat hooks. I don't know if anyone else noticed it in the movie's Bag End. In the book it's described well, as a place all 13 dwarves hug their cloaks. You can see it on the side in the movie, stretches all the way down the hall. --lotr42
- When Bilbo didn't want to give up the ring at Bag End. It is close to the book but the best part to me was after Gandalf gets all big and scary and tells him he isn't going to rob him... instead of getting mad or responding in anger as most of us humans do, he runs to get a hug! Oh it just seemed so hobbitish to me. -- merithehobbit
- Bilbo: It's mine to keep... MY PREciouSSSS!!! -- vampirekitty969

- The way Sam staggers ever so slightly when they part to go their own ways after an evening in the inn, before Frodo's life was about to change for ever. -- norgara1
- The way Sam staggers down Bagshot Row after he and Frodo were drinking at the pub. -- galadrigal
- The repetition "is it secret, is it safe?" -- JudLenDia
- One of my very favorite moments from the very first viewing is the way Frodo's hand dips when Gandalf drops the Ring into it, because it is heavier than expected. This is described in the book, but not mentioned in the movie, just shown. It's like having insider information. -- CelandineHaleth2
- Particular expressions on Gandalf's face: like when Frodo first doesn't see the inscription on the ring, but later does -- OChichiriNoMikoO

- The look on Gandalf's face when Frodo discovers the inscription on the Ring. -- FooluvaTook
- Anytime we see Frodo's face. I don't mean that in an "I love Elijah" way. I mean that he was just the perfect hobbit. That look of innocence and fear combined with knowing the right thing and resolving to do it, no matter how tough and frightening. -- katran28
- The writing on the ring... so curly and cool -- Meiyoshin
- How well Jackson gave the Ring its own character in the story, with moods and a voice of its own. The Ring even has billing in the credits. -- proudfoot45

- I love when Gandalf catches Sam outside the window and Frodo's trying not to laugh out loud. -- Fr90d90
- When Gandalf is telling Frodo what to do and where to go and then they find Sam and pull him up and Sam says something like "I heard some great deal about a dark lord a ring and something about the end of the world" heeheehee funny! -- GaLaDrIeL3001
- The look on both Hobbit's faces when Gandalf leaves them all alone in the woods. -- norgara1
- Overgrown shire fields -- susdi3
- I like the shot of Frodo and Sam setting up their first camp in the Green Hill Country, kindling the fire and smoking their pipes... so hobbitty. That's always the "point of no return", for me and I am sucked in for the next 2 hours and 30 minutes... :) -- Narsilia
- I loved how they added some things about Sam (his farthest step, "oh, something about a ring, and the end of the world, but noting of importance!", him dancing with Rosie in the beginning.) -- samsbestfan
- Sam's farthest step from home -- AvEtUw
- Sam's "farthest I've ever been" step. -- Idril
- I love the scene when Sam stops and says that if he takes one more step it will be the farthest he's ever gone, and then he takes the step. The scene isn't inthe book, but putting it into the move says so much about Sam and all the hobbits. Good old practical, stouthearted Sam! -- okassan
- I saw the car. But I was also looking for it so who cares?? I just won't look next time and it will cease to exist. :) -- Bridget Chubb
- Isengard. Wow -- vampirekitty969
- I Love how Gandalf's staff is earthy, and Saruman's is worldly. -- merithehobbit
- The way Gandalf's pipe fit perfectly into his staff -- Meiyoshin
- The rough hand-woven look of Gandalf's robe, especially in contrast
to Saruman's much finer and more sophisticated garments. -- weaverbird53
- I liked how Saruman's staff was shaped like Orthanc, with a globe inset. I guess that represents the palantir. -- QrJspr
- Christopher Lee as Saruran ... "Sauron is powerful..." -- burglar4hire
- Saruman's study in Orthanc is at least as cluttered with papers as Bag End -- Culurien7
- The clothes the clothes the clothes, I can just feel the bumpiness and heft of the Nazgul
togs, the coolness and weight of the glass beads on Galadriel's silk dress, the itchy fuzziness of Gandalf's knitted hand/arm whatchamacallems, and the drape of all that silk the elves wore. -- SilliMarilli
- I've kind of begun to like the Wizard fight too. It isn't really right, but it's actually quite amusing. -- Alquandel
- The wizards battle. (Was it like that in the book? I remember Gandalf being banished to the tower top but I cant recall a karate fight.) -- Balrogface
- I like the Wizard Smackdown (Saruman vs. Gandalf) -- QrJspr

- I love how Sam pulls Merry off of Frodo in the cornfield. "Get off of him!" -- Bridget Chubb
- Cloaks, I love them, and everyone has them. I love the textures, and the class distinctions borne by just how detailed they are. Frodo's is cross over double snap, Merry and Pippins are also buttons and more detailed than Sam's tie at the neck. -- merithehobbit

- The English accents of the cast. -- Eowyn909

- What someone else said: every scene with a hobbit :-) -- QrJspr
- Hobbits rolling down the hill! -- Boromirrocks
- My favorite comedic scene involves the hobbits [of course !]. When they 'run into' each other in the crop. The comedic timing is perfect and Frodo's astonished face is priceless ! I love the roll down the hill and the rough landing...very realistic...and they're all filthy from there on out. Very cute scene and definitely adds depth to the hobbits characters. -- Ja33in97
- The tangled pile of bodies after the four hobbits tumble down the hill and Pippin's declaration of "That was close!" as he looks at a very convincing looking pile of horse dung. I seem to recall the very faint sound of flies buzzing. -- FooluvaTook
- Curly hair for hobbits. Furry feet, and all the attention to hair in general. -- merithehobbit

- Frodo's face when they are stood in the lane as he says "I think we should get off the road". -- norgara1
- The Nazgul horses' big hooves and sweaty hairy legs. -- Idril
- The hooves of the Black Riders' horses were those of horses that had been through mud. It wasn't sweat. (I'm a horse person.) As a person who knows horses, they were agitated and restless, as a real horse would be under the service of pure evil. They were supposed to be real horses stolen from Rohan, I think. -- Eowyn909
- The dirty hooves of the horses of the Nazgūl (as if there is orc-blood on them). -- JudLenDia
- A friend of mine thought the (Nazgul) horses looked like they'd been tromping through gore, and it made them look particularly terrifying. -- proudfoot45
- They (Nazgul horses) had nails sticking out of their hooves! -- samsbestfan
- The hobbits (besides Frodo) dividing up the mushrooms while hiding from the Nazgul -- Bridget Chubb

- The shriek of the Nazgūl and their long swords. -- JudLenDia
- The human and hobbit level doors in the gate of Bree -- ElrosPeredhil
- Another "little" thing I noticed - at Bree, there were a lot of big/little visuals. The 2 peepholes in the gate, and as the camera comes up over the gate, the pony standing next to the big draft horse downscreen left - stuff like that struck me as a visual cue that the scale of everything was about to change, as the hobbits entered the "Big" world. -- simbelmyne56
- Peter Jackson's drunken burp on the roads of Bree. -- norgara1
- Finally saw PJ in Bree!! I guess I was looking for him inside the Prancing Pony instead of just inside Bree. -- Bridget Chubb

- Pippin: "They come in PINTS?!" CLASSIC! -- ElrosPeredhil

- "It comes it pints?!" -- Iciclecrystal
- "It comes in PINTS?" -- weaverbird53

- Strider staring at the hobbits in the Pranching Pony, fire reflecting on his eyes. -- Alquandel
- The first view of Strider, with the cloak and the pipe...exactly as I had pictured him! -- Marielwing M
- In the "Prancing Pony" when we first see "Strider". Face shadowed by his hood, smoking his pipe, as he draws on it the gleam from the bowl briefly lights his face - a dirty looking, thoroughly unsavoury looking character - absolutely PERFECT interpretation of the scene in the book. -- joesmyjo
- Aragorn in the corner at The Prancing Pony. -- Boromirrocks
- LOVE...LOVE the little nods to the chapters in the book...Like "A Long Expected Party" out of Gandalf's mouth, and "A shortcut to what?" from Sam and "MUSHROOMS" from Pippin. Even the way that Sam says "Strider" reminds me that that is the chapter name. -- merithehobbit
- "Baggins? sure I know a Baggins. Frrodo Baggins" then Pips face when he disapears -- Fr90d90
- Pippin -- Bridget Chubb
- The nod to the hobbit obsession with genealogy, as Pippin starts to explain his family tree to a group of complete strangers at the bar in the Prancing Pony. -- sovaysovay
- The look on the hobbits' faces, especially Pippin, when Frodo disappears at The Prancing Pony. -- dyanstar
- Frodo's face when he has the ring on for the first time and sees the eye of Sauron which says "I see you"...makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end. -- norgara1
- The delerium like sequences when Frodo wears the ring were cool. -- Balrogface
- Frodo's look of relief after taking off the ring. Then his startled expression when Aragorn grabs him. Plus Aragorn tossing him up the stairs. I wonder if Faramir will toss them around like that. -- Idril
- How Aragorn pushes *Mr. Underhill* to bring him upstairs. -- JudLenDia
- Aragorn in Bree. -- elulla took1
- The first time we see Aragron when he removes his hood. (cor!!) -- norgara1
- How Strider pinches the candles while saying "I can avoid being seen if I wish..." -- palantir3owner

- The way the Black riders crushed the poor guy under the gate to Bree. -- vampirekitty969
- The way the Nazgul enter the Prancing Pony and the Inn owner is hiding behind the door petrified. -- norgara1
- The way the Nazgul silently raise their swords over the 'sleeping hobbits',. and their awful screeches when they find they have been tricked. -- norgara1
- The scene in Bree, when the hobbits are sleeping, cut with the scenes of the Nazgul sneaking into the bedroom. The first time I saw it, I enjoyed that "Now, wait a minute..." feeling before it became clear what was going on. Now it kinda cracks me up how well choreographed the Nazgul are in their attack on the beds: "Okay, boys, on three. One... two... three!" And cut to Sam startling awake. Heheheh. -- BunnieBugs
- The scene at the Prancing Pony when the ring wraiths were in the hobbit's room....though i did finish the book before the movie was out, so i knew the out come, however my beloved fiancee did not, and I might say, she was a bit startled when the wraiths were standing in the room with swords drawn. -- gothic genre
- The Nazgul stabbing the hobbits' beds at the Prancing Pony; this kind of scene can't be done in a book but is very effective on screen -- Iorethdttr
- Frodo's stricken face as he sits on the bed in the Prancing Pony listening to the screeching Ringwraiths across the way. -- norgara1
- A little thing I loved was the pronunciation of Nazgul. Even the name is scary. -- Tachachesin
- John Howe's paintings coming to life in the movie -- susdi3
- How Sam gives these untrusting glares to all the folks in Bree and Aragorn even when they are following him. -- merithehobbit
- I liked Aragorn's gentle protectiveness of Frodo, plus the sternness he can also adopt towards his little charges. Rather like an elder brother telling the younger ones to quit futhering around. -- Erin
- I enjoyed were NOT in the books. I adore Billy's Scottish lilt, as he says, "It cooms in pints?" I love Merry's "I don't think he knows about second breakfast, Pip." (Or for that matter, any of the sly little digs Merry gets in! LOL!) -- ErinRua
- The way Pippin gets all bent out of shape that Aragorn doesn't know about second breakfast and elevensies etc. -- merithehobbit
- The second breakfast scene. -- dyanstar
- Pippin: "We've had breakfast, yes, but what about second breakfast?"
Merry: "I don't think he knows about second breakfast, Pip." -- Marielwing M - Pippin: "Do you think he knows about elevensies? luncheon? tea time? supper? dinner?" Merry: "I wouldn't count on it Pip" -- GaLaDrIeL3001
- I liked that all of Aragorn's gear looked weathered and worn and lived-in, and also that you could see his bow UNstrung amongst his gear, as it should be for travel. (I'm pretty sure Viggo could have danged near *lived* in what he carried on his back or in his pouch, LOL!) -- ErinRua
- The way Aragorn carries his cloak rolled up across his chest. -- Idril
- Bill the pony -- vampirekitty969
- I loved - and grieved for - the deep, painful groans of the great old trees of Isengard, as Saruman directed their destruction. -- Erin
- Thanks to ErinRua for mentioning a scene that I found more painful to watch than I ever would have imagined: the scene where Saruman orders the destruction of all those ancient and noble trees. It really struck me on some primal level. Maybe I'm an Ent at heart. (Can't wait to see them in the next movie!) -- MEDICRN18
- Frodong his eyes from a dead sleep on Weathertop, and realizing danger. -- FrdLives
- "Tomatoes and crispy bacon" on Weathertop -- susdi3

- "That's Nice! Ash In My Tomato" -- Fr90d90
- At Weathertop when the four hobbits see the Ringwraiths walking through the mists towards them. -- norgara1
- How they all group together swords ready just waiting for the Ringwraiths to come for them, and Frodo's look of horror as he sees the first one step through the arch (one of my most favourite scenes and music to go with it). -- norgara1
- The scene on Weathertop when Frodo puts on the ring and gets to see the Witch-King of Angmar's wraith...that is EXACTLY the way I saw it in my mind when I first read it - down to the way the camera pulled back! I was in awe! -- ElrosPeredhil
- Sam's devotion to Frodo -- KralovnaKrnousa
- Frodo's "Oh Sam" after he has been stabbed, and Sam's tear which trickles down his face (sob!) -- norgara1

- The butterfly going to Gandalf and the music accompanying it. -- Eason consulting
- The moth the Gandalf charms...that he holds him in hishand and the moth doesn't fly away (plus the little thing is so CUTE). -- ihearthobbits
- The little butterfly thingy, or whatever it was, that helps Gandalf when he's stuck at Isengard -- OChichiriNoMikoO
- I also like scene at Isengard with the moth that Gandalf catches and speaks to...does anyone know what he said to it? I know it must have been a plea for rescue, but what language was it? I found it a very powerful scene. (the first time I saw it I thought Gandalf was going to eat it) -- QrJspr
- The drive(?) of the camera from the top of Orthanc down into the forges of Isengard. -- JudLenDia
- There are about 100 details from the book they threaded into the movie. What I love about it is that they didn't make a big deal about including them. Just sneaked them in here and there. Each time I go I feel like a hunter looking for gems, and I have yet to not notice something new. :) -- lotr42
- The three stone trolls in the background (from Bilbo's adventure and he was telling the story to the hobbit children) -- EF Nuti
- The stone trolls. -- weaverbird53
- I loved EVERY time they put something in the background that was in the books, ie, the trolls. -- ElrosPeredhil
- I thought I saw a bird's nest in Bert's ear. Nice to have that accurate even if most of the scene was wrong. -- melkorormorgath
- A small pair of nods to the Hobbit (besides the songs). The story by Bilbo of the Troll's turning to stone, and then the Trolls in the background in the scene where Aragorn tries to heal Frodo after Weathertop. I missed the scene my first viewing, but it was a neat nod, even if quiet. -- Tachachesin
- When Frodo's face is all green and icky from the poison (awww! pooor baby) -- vampirekitty969
- The light that comes from the Elves (Arwen and Galadriel) -- Boromirrocks
- The way Arwen says "Frodo". What an ethereal voice that is. -- norgara1
- The way Arwen's dress looks so different to Frodo, since he's mostly in the unseen world. -- Idril
- Aragorn making a poultice of herbs and spit for Frodo's wound on Weathertop; I think maybe Viggo invented that, but it supports the idea of the True King -- Iorethdttr
- All that elvish speaking!! -- OChichiriNoMikoO
- Another best part was eldarin tongue when I realized that I understand many of the words Arwen said:) -- GnihaR
- I liked the way Arwen was incorporated. I think she was marvelous. I liked the line "What grace has given me, let it pass to him, that he might be spared. Save him." I thought that was beautiful. -- fzMousie
- Although Glorfindel didn't make the movie, his horse did... and got the same commands "Norolim Asfaloth!" -- EF Nuti
- The horse chase to the ford. -- Boromirrocks
- Arwen being chased by the Ringwraiths. -- Norgara
- The chase to the ford. -- weaverbird53
- The way Arwen get's scratched by the twig thing and doesn't even notice. That gash was deeeeepp!!! I would be like, "Ah! My beautiful face! It's RUINNNNNNNNNEEDD!! DIE DUMBASS BLACK RIDER NAZGUL TYPE THINGAMAGIGS!!!!!" (followed by scary war cry and the merciless slaughter of innocent dead ring-wraith people. Followed by slapping (and dumping) of Aragorn, because it's all his fault. And besides, I always liked Legolas better!!!) -- vampirekitty969
- The whole chase scene. Wow! -- norgara1
- Ahhh to one who adores Liv Tyler.. I mean Arwen- "If you want him, come and claim him!" Just seeing her on a horse, holding a sword.. -- Kildarian Pacco
- The horses that appeared in the water of the flood caused by Arwen WICKED! -- Meiyoshin
- The River rising against the Nazgul. The shot was amazing. -- Tachachesin
- I found out that I like Arwen's speech better when I don't look at the subtitles (I know what they say by now anyway! :)) I like hearing the Elvish more than "Come back to the light..." -- Bridget Chubb
- The nice connection between Arwen and Frodo. After all, she does give him her place on the ship to the Undying Lands. -- Idril

- The beautiful bed that Frodo woke up in at Rivendell. -- Norgara
- The bed in Rivendell with the statue guarding the sleeper. -- Idril
- The way Sam takes Frodo's hand and rubs it when he finds Frodo has woken up. (how sweet!) -- norgara1
- Saw the falling leaves at Rivendell!! -- Bridget Chubb
- The whole Rivendell scenery was awesome. -- SarBara12
- I thought Rivendell was absolutely lovely, so elegant yet so organic, a place where I would feel at home, unlike the ethereal mystery of Lothlorien. (In the books, I notice that while the days pass in slow leisure at Rivendell, it was only at Lothlorien that Time truly stepped aside. While the movie does not indicate this, Sam was astonished to notice the phase of the moon, and thus realize they had been there over a month, when it seemed only days.) Anyhow, Rivendell seemed just a wonderful, restful place. -- Erin
- The way everyone looks washed and clean after their arrival at Rivendell. -- norgara1
- How Merry and Pippin are always eating something, even when they are reunited with the newly recovered Frodo in the walkway at Rivendell. -- merithehobbit
- The hobbits hugging in Rivendell -- Bridget Chubb
- Apples. I know NZ grows lots of them, and maybe I'm waaay off base here, but I think he employed them as sort of a motif for the comforts and safety of home (i.e. the Shire), and possibly the innocence of that happy haven. I noticed that at Bag End they were everywhere; tables, window ledges, etc, but that the farther from home and hearth our young hobbits got, the scarcer the apples became. Aragorn lobs them as an appeasement of the hobbitish need for Second Breakfast (no, I didn't see any label), and I think Pippin (how apropos is that?) was munching one in the reunion scene at Rivendell (haven of safety), but I don't remember seeing one after that point. -- simbelmyne56
- Bilbo aging finally during the movie without the ring in his possession. -- Eason consulting

- Saw Elrond's butterfly hair clip!! So pretty! :) You can see it when he's talking to Gandalf alone and at the Council. -- Bridget Chubb
- Elrond's cool hair knots and awesome crown. -- FooluvaTook
- Has anyone gotten a good look at the clip in Elrond's hair in the scene where he and Gandalf are talking? -- Culurien7
- Haven't managed to catch Elrond's butterfly/dragonfly hairclip, but I love the little knots at the sides. -- sovaysovay
- Our first look at Legolas as he dismounts his horse (fluttering heart be still!!)
Same goes for Boromir. -- norgara1 - I enjoyed that I wasn't familiar with the actors/actresses. It made it more real. They made good choices. -- Iciclecrystal

- Aragorn is reading Bilbo's book when he first meets Boromir. I didn't notice it until the fourth time I saw the movie. -- QrJspr

- How Aragorn is so nicely dressed for the council of Elrond - seems appropriate since he was revealed to be the lost king of Gondor. -- FooluvaTook
- The look and sigh of relief when Frodo places the ring down at the Council meeting. Thinking it is all over. -- norgara1
- One of the scenes that nearly broke my heart was watching Frodo in torment when he had to place the One Ring on the table during the debate in Rivendell. Elijah Wood caught the essence of the struggle he was enduring constantly because of that damnably evil thing. When Gimli tried to break it with his ax, Frodo's reaction was heartrending. -- Pennemiriel
- Everything about Boromir!! -- Boromirrocks

- Boromir and Aragorn bristling at each other at the Council of Elrond. -- weaverbird53
- I loved that Boromir seemed ... more noble and less grasping, than in the books. -- ErinRua
- I got a huge kick out of Legolas standing up and being assertive at the Council - which of course was not in the books. Hate me, but I just liked seeing the little fella act ... princely! -- ErinRua
- I loved the outrageous accent that Mr. Rhys-Davies gave Gimli: perfect for a gruff but good-hearted Dwarf! -- ErinRua
- The way Frodo winces with real pain and fear when Gimli tries to chop at the Ring and the Ring calls out. -- Marielwing M
- The way silence and stillness falls over the council meeting after Elrond announces that "One of you must do this". -- norgara1
- Gimli gets so mad he spits... too cute! -- Idril
- The reflection in the Ring of the Council of Elrond arguing amongst themselves about who was going to take the Ring to be destroyed. -- Norgara
- The ring, whispering to try and influence the people around it, and how it chants the Ring Poem in the language of Mordor during the Council of Elrond. -- merithehobbit
- Frodo's face as it dawned on him that he was to be the one to take the ring. -- Norgara
- The way is starts to dawn on Frodo that he will be the one to take the ring to Mordor whilst everyone else is arguing around him, and his small voice announces "I'll take it" and no-one hears him the first time. -- norgara1
- During the disintegration of the Council of Elrond, Frodo steps forward and declares that he will take the Ring to Mount Doom. The camera cuts to Gandalf, who hearing this, closes his eyes as if a sorrow long dreaded for Frodo is now coming to pass. Artfully done! -- Elrond4873
- Then the look of almost guilt on all the council members faces as they hear Frodo say for the second time that he will take the ring to Mordor. Whilst they were all arguing amongst themselves this small hobbit without any experience of fighting volunteers. -- norgara1
- Sir Ian's amazing facial expressions, the twinkles in his eyes when he gazes at the hobbits fondly (and I've never really SEEN a twinkle in an actor's eyes before!), and the incredible mix of pain and deep affection in his eyes as he registers that Frodo has just volunteered to bear the ring to Mordor. Sir Ian has earned my eternal respect and love for his portrayal. (And I'm not one to worship actors at all!) He brought Tolkien's Gandalf to life for me. -- MEDICRN18
- Gandalf's expression as Frodo takes up the task at the Council - pain and pride combined. -- weaverbird53
- The expression on Gandalf's face when Frodo says he would take the ring to Mordor -- OChichiriNoMikoO
- Gandalf - EVERYTHING HE DOES!. I don't think Mr. Jackson could have come up with a better Gandalf - Sir Ian IS Gandalf - I especially love his expression in Rivendell when he, hearing Frodo offering to take the ring, shows such pain and sorrow on his face, as if he something he long feared and dreaded has happened - this scene means so much more if you know, as Gandalf seems to, what is in store for Frodo. -- ElrosPeredhil

- Sam is so simply and totally loyal. -- Eowyn909
- I liked that Elrond was an interesting blend of almost-scary, timeless Elven power, (he's after all older than the bloody hills!) and yet he readily unbends to joke at Sam's unquenchable loyalty, and smile at the hobbits in general. -- Erin
- Elrond's raised eyebrows as Merry and Pippin emerge from hiding to join the meeting. -- norgara1
- "Anyway, you need people of intelligence on this sort of mission...quest...thing." --Pippin

- Setting of the musical theme "Concerning Hobbits" in a minor key, slower tempo, more "serious" orchestration, segueing into the first setting of the "Fellowship" theme (as the Fellowship first sets out) -- AFGriffith
- Beautiful New Zealand -- Eowyn909

- The music -- Eowyn909
- I loved the glimpses of hobbit-meals on the campfires ~ sausages and I don't know what all, but it sure looked yummy! -- ErinRua
- Merry and Pippin practicing, once again eating as they go, and wrestling with Boromir. I felt it really added to their loss when Boromir dies. His character is overwhelmingly dark and nearly untrustworthy sometimes, and this helped to show they really did know and trust him and were truly upset when he dies. Only Frodo has the reserve about Boromir. -- merithehobbit
- Boromir teaching Merry and Pippin to use swords. -- Alquandel
- Borormir teaching Merry & Pippin to fight. (not in the book but delightful) -- Eason consulting
- Boromir was schooling the hobbits on swordsmanship, on the mountain. Lots of little details there I liked, such as Bomorir counting out the strokes, and Aragorn bidding them to "move your feet." Then when Merry gets a sharp smack, Boromir is instantly apologetic - and is promptly bowled-over by not one but TWO rowdy little hair-foots! No, that scene is not in the book, but it gave us a glimpse of Boromir's good heart, and was just a fun moment of interaction between the hobbits and the Big Folk. -- Erin
- Boromir laughing as Merry and Pippin fall on him when they are practising fighting (about the only time you do see him smile) -- norgara1
- I love the sword-exercise-turned-wrestling-match between Boromir and the two youngest hobbits. -- ErinRua
- Boromir teaching the hobbits swordplay, and the characterisation of Boromir generally. I've seen some comments to the effect that he has been made too sympathetic in the film, but surely the point of the Ring is NOT that it can ensnare a weak, amoral creature like Gollum, but that it can destroy a good man who is genuinely trying to do the right thing. -- sovaysovay
- Merry and Pippin's sword lesson with Boromir and Aragorn -- SqrrlBane

- On Caradhras, when Boromir is holding up the Ring, I love his startled reaction to Aragorn's second "Boromir!" It's less like he jumps and more like he almost falls over when he's brought out of his reverie. -- BunnieBugs
- The wavering of Boromir when he is told to give the ring back to Frodo. -- JudLenDia
- Frodo's very cold looking face when Boromir gives him the ring back. -- norgara1

- Legolas can walk on snow, Boromir and Aragorn are carrying the frozen hobbits, and how all the beards are caked in snow on Caradhras. -- merithehobbit
- You know, in the scene where they're all struggling through the snow, trying to make it around the mountain, everyone keeps commenting about Legolas walking across the top of the snow. I didn't even notice that because both times I was riveted by Aragorn & Boromir carrying 2 hobbits each, just as they did in the book. I loved that they included that. -- Entowyn (K1PTOO)
- Aragorn and Boromir with one hobbit under each of their arms so that the Hobbits don't vanish in the snow! -- Norgara

- When the avalanche falls, I like the way Legolas pulls Gandalf back at the last moment. -- norgara1
- The grunting noise that Gimli makes when he emerges from the snow. -- norgara1
- The way Gandalf asked Frodo to choose their path. I always see it as being for Boromir's benefit... like Gandalf is saying "This is the ringbearer. He is important. He's not a child so stop rubbing him on the head." -- Idril
- The way Frodo looks at Sam before he answers Gandalf's question of which they should go. -- norgara1
- The way Gimli says "The walls, the walls". as they approach Moria. -- norgara1

- Aragorn at Moria (especially the scene when he has wet hair and is standing by Boromir, who also has wet hair, after the Watcher lets Frodo go!!) -- elulla took1
- Probably an overall favorite thing of the movie is that it is so physical. The characters are always bumping into each other or embracing in some way, either catching each other or just plain hugging! Which also reminds me of the great emotion that is shown. There are more men in this movie than women and yet it does not suffer for truly shown affection and tears when warranted. -- Ja33in97
- The way that no-one seems to bother about what had just happened when they are entombed in the mines and begin walking. -- norgara1
- Aragorn and Boromir whipping the Watcher in the water, and after they all get trapped inside, no one seems to thank them for their actions. They just drip it off! It seems to be understood and they all are facing the long walk through Moria together. -- merithehobbit
- All the dust and cobwebs in Moria...Eeeewww. -- merithehobbit

- Did anyone notice how Boromir started off so hostile toward Aragorn? At the Council he was contemptuous and just saw him as a rival. But every time the party stopped Aragorn would be sitting with him and listening and talking quietly to him. - How Lurtz smacks his lips while preparing his last arrow for Boromir. -- JudLenDia
- The Uruk-hai's sensual cruelty as he kills Boromir. -- Idril
- The way Aragorn is beaten black and blue by Lurtz. -- norgara1
- I absolutely loved the part where Lurtz (the head Uruk-Hai) has been run through by Aragorn, and he pulls Aragorn closer and taunts him. Then Aragorn whips out the sword and slices his head clean off. The audience cheered for that scene! -- katran28

- My absolute favorite part of the movie is where Legolas walks up to Aragorn as Boromir is dying. The look on his face is simply breathtaking and heartbreaking. -- KSandland
- I noticed the broken horn for the first time yesterday. And I was also struck by the look on Legolas's face when he sees Aragorn leaning over the dying Boromir. There's sorrow for being too late to help, but also a kind of mystification -- dying is so unfamiliar to elves, really, and you can see it in his face. -- lorienelwyn
- Legolas's face when he arrived at the scene with Aragorn and the now dead Boromir. -- Norgara

- My favorite little thing (maybe not so little, but hey he's a hobbit after all!) is FRODO! Don't worry, I'm not going to go on and on about how hot Elijah Wood is etc. :) I just think that he did a great job as Frodo. Especially facial expressions. At the beginning of the movie he was so happy and carefree, but after Gandalf died he totally changed, and by the end of the movie he was, like Elijah Wood described him, just a shadow of his former self. I would love to tell eveyone to sit and listen too - but most people (in England at least) jump up and leave as soon as the credits start. Twice I have been the last person left in the cinema (wth the cleaners peering round the corner at me waiting for me to go)! -- Lorellin71450158
- I had a Cinema Professor tell me that if you loved a movie you should honor the people who worked so hard on it by remaining while the credits roll. I have no problem with that esp. since the music is so great! My family hates it because then they have to hang around waiting for me (poor babies, *smirk*). -- BadWargMama
