One of the things that makes Tolkien's Middle-Earth so real is that he kept adding layer after layer of details... little things. Everyone mentions the invented languages of course, but also who else has characters in a story that wonder if they'll ever be characters in a story? Attention to detail has got to be the professor's signature talent.

volvo s40

The movie (Or FOTR at least) is very different from the books in many details. But of all the changes that PJ&Co made to the Fellowship to get it to fit on the movie screen and to make it popular enough to pay for itself... there's one thing that they didn't change at all. They followed the professor's example and put an incredible amount of effort into all the little things that make Middle-Earth so real.

Here is a list of our favorite little things about the movie, contributed by its most devoted fans. -- Idril

  1. Ok, my favorite little things (taken from the 78-page press notes I got for writing my review): more than 900 suits of real, hand-made armor, more than 2,000 rubber and safety weapons, more than 100 real, hand-made weapons, more than 20,000 individual household and everyday items handmade by artisans, and more than 1,600 pairs of prosthetic feet and ears, individually sized and shaped. -- neebleneeble

  11. In theng battle scene where the 'good guys' line up to fight the 'bad guys'...as the 'bad guys' reach the line of 'good guys' the ones in front do this totally awesome chain reaction (think Radio City Music Hall Rocketts) with these scyth-like blade weapons! -- Dernhelm1

  12. My very favorite scene was in the beginning of the movie how orcs kept falling by the volley of humans' arrows, the music on that part. Then comes that very best scene with those Noldor-like elves in bronze armor shooting in straight line, and not in the volley, and then they draw those scythe-swords and decimate the foul creatures:-))))epic battles I adore so much:) -- GnihaR

  13. Elves in bright armor. -- Idril

  14. Gil-galad. I thought he wasn't in the prologue at all until I saw a picture of him on a movie shot website. He's a hottie! If you know what to look for you can see him in the movie. He's in two very quick flashes. His blue armor and crown are just as detailed as Elrond and Isuldur's costumes. All that work for 1.5 seconds of film. Amazing. -- IdrilCelebrindal

Gandalf replies to the effect that a wizard is never early nor late, but arrives precisely when needed - and then we watch his stern expression start to quiver and wobble, and his eyes start to twinkle, and suddenly they are *both* laughing out loud, joyful in their reunion. I just LOVED that! -- Erin

  35. Frodo smiling at the beginning of the film when he sees Gandalf. (So few smiles left after he took on the Ring). -- Norgara

  72. I love Bilbo's house, the pegs the little bits of dirt on the floor, the crumbs on the table. The loaf of bread was straight out of the oven...it was steaming. All the food about his house, and that he would stuff a bit of cake in his mouth and talk. -- merithehobbit

  73. I loved the homey clutter of Bag End, and could almost smell the warm scents of old paper and book bindings. One felt invited to come in, find a corner under a sunlit window, and there simply curl up with a cup of tea, and read until your chin nodded to your chest. -- Erin

Chapter 5 ~ Farewell Dear Bilbo

  111. In the entryway (of Bag End) there's a long row of wooden coat hooks. I don't know if anyone else noticed it in the movie's Bag End. In the book it's described well, as a place all 13 dwarves hug their cloaks. You can see it on the side in the movie, stretches all the way down the hall. --lotr42

  112. When Bilbo didn't want to give up the ring at Bag End. It is close to the book but the best part to me was after Gandalf gets all big and scary and tells him he isn't going to rob him... instead of getting mad or responding in anger as most of us humans do, he runs to get a hug! 136. The repetition "is it secret, is it safe?" -- JudLenDia

  137. One of my very favorite moments from the very first viewing is the way Frodo's hand dips when Gandalf drops the Ring into it, because it is heavier than expected. This is described in the book, but not mentioned in the movie, just shown. It's like having insider information. -- CelandineHaleth2

  138. Particular expressions on Gandalf's face: like when Frodo first doesn't see the inscription on the ring, but later does -- OChichiriNoMikoO

  140. The look on Gandalf's face when Frodo discovers the inscription on the Ring. -- FooluvaTook

  141. Anytime we see Frodo's face. I don't mean that in an "I love Elijah" way. I mean that he was just the perfect hobbit. That look of innocence and fear combined with knowing the right thing and resolving to do it, no matter how tough and frightening. -- katran28

  142. The writing on the ring... so curly and cool -- Meiyoshin

  151. I love when Gandalf catches Sam outside the window and Frodo's trying not to laugh out loud. -- Fr90d90

  158. Sam's "farthest I've ever been" step. -- Idril

  159. I love the scene when Sam stops and says that if he takes one more step it will be the farthest he's ever gone, and then he takes the step. The scene isn't inthe book, but putting it into the move says so much about Sam and all the hobbits. Good old practical, stouthearted Sam! -- okassan

  160. I saw the car. But I was also looking for it so who cares?? I just won't look next time and it will cease to exist. :) -- Bridget Chubb

  168. Saruman's study in Orthanc is at least as cluttered with papers as Bag End -- Culurien7

The clothes the clothes the clothes, I can just feel the bumpiness and heft of the Nazgul togs, the coolness and weight of the glass beads on Galadriel's silk dress, the itchy fuzziness of Gandalf's knitted hand/arm whatchamacallems, and the drape of all that silk the elves wore. -- SilliMarilli

  170. I've kind of begun to like the Wizard fight too. It isn't really right, but it's actually quite amusing. -- Alquandel

I love the roll down the hill and the rough landing...very realistic...and they're all filthy from there on out. Very cute scene and definitely adds depth to the hobbits characters. -- Ja33in97

  186. The tangled pile of bodies after the four hobbits tumble down the hill and Pippin's declaration of "That was close!" as he looks at a very convincing looking pile of horse dung. I seem to recall the very faint sound of flies buzzing. -- FooluvaTook

  191. The Nazgul horses' big hooves and sweaty hairy legs. -- Idril

  192. The hooves of the Black Riders' horses were those of horses that had been through mud. It wasn't sweat. (I'm a horse person.) As a person who knows horses, they were agitated and restless, as a real horse would be under the service of pure evil. They were supposed to be real horses stolen from Rohan, I think. -- Eowyn909

  193. The dirty hooves of the horses of the Nazgūl (as if there is orc-blood on them). -- JudLenDia

  196. The hobbits (besides Frodo) dividing up the mushrooms while hiding from the Nazgul -- Bridget Chubb

Chapter 12 ~ At The Sign Of The Prancing Pony

  215. The human and hobbit level doors in the gate of Bree -- ElrosPeredhil

  216. Another "little" thing I noticed - at Bree, there were a lot of big/little visuals. The 2 peepholes in the gate, and as the camera comes up over the gate, the pony standing next to the big draft horse downscreen left - stuff like that struck me as a visual cue that the scale of everything was about to change, as the hobbits entered the "Big" world. -- simbelmyne56

  217. Peter Jackson's drunken burp on the roads of Bree. -- norgara1

  218. Finally saw PJ in Bree!! I guess I was looking for him inside the Prancing Pony instead of just inside Bree. -- Bridget Chubb

  219. The look of relief on Frodo's face once he enters the Prancing Pony only to find out that Gandalf is not there. -- norgara1

  220. Pippin's look of wonder at the tall people in the Inn at Bree. -- FrdLives

  228. Pippin: It comes in PINTS?! -- Gimli1482

  229. "It comes it pints?!" -- Iciclecrystal

  230. "It comes in PINTS?" -- weaverbird53

  231. Pippin: "They come in PINTS?!" -- Meiyoshin

  232. "It comes in Pints?" from Pippin, and my favorite how Sam says "You've had a whole half already!" A whole half! -- merithehobbit

  233. Strider staring at the hobbits in the Pranching Pony, fire reflecting on his eyes. -- Alquandel

  234. The first view of Strider, with the cloak and the pipe...exactly as I had pictured him! -- Marielwing M

  235. In the "Prancing Pony" when we first see "Strider". Face shadowed by his hood, smoking his pipe, as he draws on it the gleam from the bowl briefly lights his face - a dirty looking, thoroughly unsavoury looking character - absolutely PERFECT interpretation of the scene in the book. -- joesmyjo

  236. Aragorn in the corner at The Prancing Pony. -- Boromirrocks

  237. LOVE...LOVE the little nods to the chapters in the book...Like "A Long Expected Party" out of Gandalf's mouth, and "A shortcut to what?" from Sam and "MUSHROOMS" from Pippin. Even the way that Sam says "Strider" reminds me that that is the chapter name. -- merithehobbit

  238. "Baggins? sure I know a Baggins. Frrodo Baggins" then Pips face when he disapears -- Fr90d90

  239. Pippin -- Bridget Chubb

  240. The nod to the hobbit obsession with genealogy, as Pippin starts to explain his family tree to a group of complete strangers at the bar in the Prancing Pony. -- sovaysovay

  241. The look on the hobbits' faces, especially Pippin, when Frodo disappears at The Prancing Pony. -- dyanstar

  243. The delerium like sequences when Frodo wears the ring were cool. -- Balrogface

  244. Frodo's look of relief after taking off the ring. Then his startled expression when Aragorn grabs him. Plus Aragorn tossing him up the stairs. I wonder if Faramir will toss them around like that. -- Idril

  251. back to top

    Chapter 13 ~ The Nazgul

  252. The Black Riders, they were just so freaky, and I loved the music played everytime they came. -- Alquandel

  253. The way the Black riders crushed the poor guy under the gate to Bree. -- vampirekitty969

  254. The way the Nazgul enter the Prancing Pony and the Inn owner is hiding behind the door petrified. -- norgara1

  255. The way the Nazgul silently raise their swords over the 'sleeping hobbits',. and their awful screeches when they find they have been tricked. -- norgara1

  256. The scene in Bree, when the hobbits are sleeping, cut with the scenes of the Nazgul sneaking into the bedroom. The first time I saw it, I enjoyed that "Now, wait a minute..." feeling before it became clear what was going on. Now it kinda cracks me up how well choreographed the Nazgul are in their attack on the beds: "Okay, boys, on three. One... two... three!" And cut to Sam startling awake. Heheheh. -- BunnieBugs

  257. The scene at the Prancing Pony when the ring wraiths were in the hobbit's room....though i did finish the book before the movie was out, so i knew the out come, however my beloved fiancee did not, and I might say, she was a bit startled when the wraiths were standing in the room with swords drawn. -- gothic genre

  258. The Nazgul stabbing the hobbits' beds at the Prancing Pony; this kind of scene can't be done in a book but is very effective on screen -- Iorethdttr

  259. Frodo's stricken face as he sits on the bed in the Prancing Pony listening to the screeching Ringwraiths across the way. -- norgara1

  260. A little thing I loved was the pronunciation of Nazgul. Even the name is scary. -- Tachachesin

  261. John Howe's paintings coming to life in the movie -- susdi3

  262. How Sam gives these untrusting glares to all the folks in Bree and Aragorn even when they are following him. -- merithehobbit

  263. I liked Aragorn's gentle protectiveness of Frodo, plus the sternness he can also adopt towards his little charges. Rather like an elder brother telling the younger ones to quit futhering around. -- Erin

  264. I enjoyed were NOT in the books. I adore Billy's Scottish lilt, as he says, "It cooms in pints?" I love Merry's "I don't think he knows about second breakfast, Pip." (Or for that matter, any of the sly little digs Merry gets in! LOL!) -- ErinRua

  265. The way Pippin gets all bent out of shape that Aragorn doesn't know about second breakfast and elevensies etc. -- merithehobbit

  268. Pippin: "Do you think he knows about elevensies? luncheon? tea time? supper? dinner?" Merry: "I wouldn't count on it Pip" -- GaLaDrIeL3001

  269. I liked that all of Aragorn's gear looked weathered and worn and lived-in, and also that you could see his bow UNstrung amongst his gear, as it should be for travel. (I'm pretty sure Viggo could have danged near *lived* in what he carried on his back or in his pouch, LOL!) -- ErinRua

  270. The way Aragorn carries his cloak rolled up across his chest. -- Idril

  271. Bill the pony -- vampirekitty969

Chapter 14 ~ The Spoiling Of Isenguard

  273. I loved - and grieved for - the deep, painful groans of the great old trees of Isengard, as Saruman directed their destruction. -- Erin

  274. Thanks to ErinRua for mentioning a scene that I found more painful to watch than I ever would have imagined: the scene where Saruman orders the destruction of all those ancient and noble trees. It really struck me on some primal level. Maybe I'm an Ent at heart. (Can't wait to see them in the next movie!) -- MEDICRN18

  279. Heard "That's nice...ashes in my tomatoes!" (Pippin on Weathertop) -- Bridget Chubb

  280. "That's Nice! Ash In My Tomato" -- Fr90d90

  281. At Weathertop when the four hobbits see the Ringwraiths walking through the mists towards them. -- norgara1

  282. How they all group together swords ready just waiting for the Ringwraiths to come for them, and Frodo's look of horror as he sees the first one step through the arch (one of my most favourite scenes and music to go with it). -- norgara1

  283. The scene on Weathertop when Frodo puts on the ring and gets to see the Witch-King of Angmar's wraith...that is EXACTLY the way I saw it in my mind when I first read it - down to the way the camera pulled back! I was in awe! -- ElrosPeredhil

  284. Sam's devotion to Frodo -- KralovnaKrnousa

  285. Frodo's "Oh Sam" after he has been stabbed, and Sam's tear which trickles down his face (sob!) -- norgara1

  286. Frodo's words "Oh Sam" after he had been stabbed by one of the Ringwraiths at Weathertop. -- Norgara

  287. Aragorn at Weathertop. -- elulla took1

  288. The battle on Weathertop gets me everytime. I just love a hero. -- Boromirrocks

  289. Aragorn twirling his sword like it's a part of him. -- Idril

  290. When one of the ringwraiths caught on fire and fell it was hilarious -- AvEtUw

  291. When one of the ringwraiths caught on fire and fell it actually looked FUNNY -- Meiyoshin

  292. The way Frodo calls out Gandalf's name when he is being carried injured over Aragorn's shoulder. -- norgara1

  293. back to top

Chapter 16 ~ The Caverns Of Isenguard

  294. The butterfly going to Gandalf and the music accompanying it. -- Eason consulting

  295. The moth the Gandalf charms...that he holds him in hishand and the moth doesn't fly away (plus the little thing is so CUTE). -- ihearthobbits

  296. The little butterfly thingy, or whatever it was, that helps Gandalf when he's stuck at Isengard -- OChichiriNoMikoO

  297. I also like scene at Isengard with the moth that Gandalf catches and speaks to...does anyone know what he said to it? I know it must have been a plea for rescue, but what language was it? I found it a very powerful scene. (the first time I saw it I thought Gandalf was going to eat it) -- QrJspr

  298. The drive(?) of the camera from the top of Orthanc down into the forges of Isengard. -- JudLenDia

  299. back to top

Chapter 17 ~ Flight To The Ford

  300. There are about 100 details from the book they threaded into the movie. What I love about it is that they didn't make a big deal about including them. Just sneaked them in here and there. Each time I go I feel like a hunter looking for gems, and I have yet to not notice something new. :) -- lotr42

  301. The three stone trolls in the background (from Bilbo's adventure and he was telling the story to the hobbit children) -- EF Nuti

  302. The stone trolls. -- weaverbird53

  303. I loved EVERY time they put something in the background that was in the books, ie, the trolls. -- ElrosPeredhil

  304. I thought I saw a bird's nest in Bert's ear. Nice to have that accurate even if most of the scene was wrong. -- melkorormorgath

  305. A small pair of nods to the Hobbit (besides the songs). The story by Bilbo of the Troll's turning to stone, and then the Trolls in the background in the scene where Aragorn tries to heal Frodo after Weathertop. I missed the scene my first viewing, but it was a neat nod, even if quiet. -- Tachachesin

  306. When Frodo's face is all green and icky from the poison (awww! pooor baby) -- vampirekitty969

  307. The light that comes from the Elves (Arwen and Galadriel) -- Boromirrocks

  308. The way Arwen says "Frodo". What an ethereal voice that is. -- norgara1

  309. The way Arwen's dress looks so different to Frodo, since he's mostly in the unseen world. -- Idril

  310. Aragorn making a poultice of herbs and spit for Frodo's wound on Weathertop; I think maybe Viggo invented that, but it supports the idea of the True King -- Iorethdttr

  311. All that elvish speaking!! -- OChichiriNoMikoO

  312. Another best part was eldarin tongue when I realized that I understand many of the words Arwen said:) -- GnihaR

  313. I liked the way Arwen was incorporated. I think she was marvelous. I liked the line "What grace has given me, let it pass to him, that he might be spared. Save him." I thought that was beautiful. -- fzMousie

  314. Although Glorfindel didn't make the movie, his horse did... and got the same commands "Norolim Asfaloth!" -- EF Nuti

  315. The horse chase to the ford. -- Boromirrocks

  316. Arwen being chased by the Ringwraiths. -- Norgara

  317. The chase to the ford. -- weaverbird53

  318. The way Arwen get's scratched by the twig thing and doesn't even notice. That gash was deeeeepp!!! I would be like, "Ah! My beautiful face! It's RUINNNNNNNNNEEDD!! DIE DUMBASS BLACK RIDER NAZGUL TYPE THINGAMAGIGS!!!!!" (followed by scary war cry and the merciless slaughter of innocent dead ring-wraith people. Followed by slapping (and dumping) of Aragorn, because it's all his fault. And besides, I always liked Legolas better!!!) -- vampirekitty969

  319. The whole chase scene. Wow! -- norgara1

  320. Ahhh to one who adores Liv Tyler.. I mean Arwen- "If you want him, come and claim him!" Just seeing her on a horse, holding a sword.. -- Kildarian Pacco

  321. The horses that appeared in the water of the flood caused by Arwen WICKED! -- Meiyoshin

  322. The River rising against the Nazgul. The shot was amazing. -- Tachachesin

  323. I found out that I like Arwen's speech better when I don't look at the subtitles (I know what they say by now anyway! :)) I like hearing the Elvish more than "Come back to the light..." -- Bridget Chubb

  324. The nice connection between Arwen and Frodo. After all, she does give him her place on the ship to the Undying Lands. -- Idril

    Chapter 19 ~ Many Meetings

  337. Saw the falling leaves at Rivendell!! -- Bridget Chubb

  338. The whole Rivendell scenery was awesome. -- SarBara12

  339. I thought Rivendell was absolutely lovely, so elegant yet so organic, a place where I would feel at home, unlike the ethereal mystery of Lothlorien. (In the books, I notice that while the days pass in slow leisure at Rivendell, it was only at Lothlorien that Time truly stepped aside. While the movie does not indicate this, Sam was astonished to notice the phase of the moon, and thus realize they had been there over a month, when it seemed only days.) Anyhow, Rivendell seemed just a wonderful, restful place. -- Erin

  340. The way everyone looks washed and clean after their arrival at Rivendell. -- norgara1

  341. How Merry and Pippin are always eating something, even when they are reunited with the newly recovered Frodo in the walkway at Rivendell. -- merithehobbit

  342. The hobbits hugging in Rivendell -- Bridget Chubb

  343. Apples. I know NZ grows lots of them, and maybe I'm waaay off base here, but I think he employed them as sort of a motif for the comforts and safety of home (i.e. the Shire), and possibly the innocence of that happy haven. I noticed that at Bag End they were everywhere; tables, window ledges, etc, but that the farther from home and hearth our young hobbits got, the scarcer the apples became. Aragorn lobs them as an appeasement of the hobbitish need for Second Breakfast (no, I didn't see any label), and I think Pippin (how apropos is that?) was munching one in the reunion scene at Rivendell (haven of safety), but I don't remember seeing one after that point. -- simbelmyne56

  344. Bilbo aging finally during the movie without the ring in his possession. -- Eason consulting

  345. Bilbo's soft blue shawl. He truly looks the old man there, being cold when all are comfortable, and how he dangles his legs on the bench. -- merithehobbit

  346. Sam's hand-knit waistcoat -- susdi3

  347. The huge pupils in the eyes of the elves, -- Dernhelm1

  351. The conversation between Elrond and Gandalf in Rivendell (a great scene!) in which Gandalf expresses reluctance that Frodo would continue to be burdened by the Ring after his sufferings in getting it to Rivendell. -- Elrond4873

  352. How Elrond calls "Isildur!" in the flashback of the crucial moment at Mount Doom. -- JudLenDia

Same goes for Boromir. -- norgara1

Chapter 23 ~ The Council Of Elrond

  374. How Aragorn is so nicely dressed for the council of Elrond - seems appropriate since he was revealed to be the lost king of Gondor. -- FooluvaTook

  375. The look and sigh of relief when Frodo places the ring down at the Council meeting. Thinking it is all over. -- norgara1

  376. One of the scenes that nearly broke my heart was watching Frodo in torment when he had to place the One Ring on the table during the debate in Rivendell. Elijah Wood caught the essence of the struggle he was enduring constantly because of that damnably evil thing. When Gimli tried to break it with his ax, Frodo's reaction was heartrending. -- Pennemiriel

  377. Everything about Boromir!! -- Boromirrocks

  378. Just the way Aragorn & Boromir held themselves & moved-both of them were excellent. -- Entowyn (K1PTOO)

  380. Boromir and Aragorn bristling at each other at the Council of Elrond. -- weaverbird53

  381. I loved that Boromir seemed ... more noble and less grasping, than in the books. -- ErinRua

  382. I got a huge kick out of Legolas standing up and being assertive at the Council - which of course was not in the books. Hate me, but I just liked seeing the little fella act ... princely! -- ErinRua

  383. I loved the outrageous accent that Mr. Rhys-Davies gave Gimli: perfect for a gruff but good-hearted Dwarf! -- ErinRua

  384. The way Frodo winces with real pain and fear when Gimli tries to chop at the Ring and the Ring calls out. -- Marielwing M

  385. The way silence and stillness falls over the council meeting after Elrond announces that "One of you must do this". -- norgara1

  386. Gimli gets so mad he spits... too cute! -- Idril

  387. The reflection in the Ring of the Council of Elrond arguing amongst themselves about who was going to take the Ring to be destroyed. -- Norgara

  388. The ring, whispering to try and influence the people around it, and how it chants the Ring Poem in the language of Mordor during the Council of Elrond. -- merithehobbit

  389. Frodo's face as it dawned on him that he was to be the one to take the ring. -- Norgara

  390. The way is starts to dawn on Frodo that he will be the one to take the ring to Mordor whilst everyone else is arguing around him, and his small voice announces "I'll take it" and no-one hears him the first time. -- norgara1

  391. During the disintegration of the Council of Elrond, Frodo steps forward and declares that he will take the Ring to Mount Doom. The camera cuts to Gandalf, who hearing this, closes his eyes as if a sorrow long dreaded for Frodo is now coming to pass. Artfully done! -- Elrond4873

  392. Then the look of almost guilt on all the council members faces as they hear Frodo say for the second time that he will take the ring to Mordor. Whilst they were all arguing amongst themselves this small hobbit without any experience of fighting volunteers. -- norgara1

  393. Sir Ian's amazing facial expressions, the twinkles in his eyes when he gazes at the hobbits fondly (and I've never really SEEN a twinkle in an actor's eyes before!), and the incredible mix of pain and deep affection in his eyes as he registers that Frodo has just volunteered to bear the ring to Mordor. Sir Ian has earned my eternal respect and love for his portrayal. (And I'm not one to worship actors at all!) He brought Tolkien's Gandalf to life for me. -- MEDICRN18

  394. Gandalf's expression as Frodo takes up the task at the Council - pain and pride combined. -- weaverbird53

  395. The expression on Gandalf's face when Frodo says he would take the ring to Mordor -- OChichiriNoMikoO

  396. Gandalf - EVERYTHING HE DOES!. I don't think Mr. Jackson could have come up with a better Gandalf - Sir Ian IS Gandalf - I especially love his expression in Rivendell when he, hearing Frodo offering to take the ring, shows such pain and sorrow on his face, as if he something he long feared and dreaded has happened - this scene means so much more if you know, as Gandalf seems to, what is in store for Frodo. -- ElrosPeredhil

  404. The look on Elrond's face when the hobbits crash the council. -- QrJspr

  405. Sam is so simply and totally loyal. -- Eowyn909

  406. I liked that Elrond was an interesting blend of almost-scary, timeless Elven power, (he's after all older than the bloody hills!) and yet he readily unbends to joke at Sam's unquenchable loyalty, and smile at the hobbits in general. -- Erin

  407. Elrond's raised eyebrows as Merry and Pippin emerge from hiding to join the meeting. -- norgara1

  408. "Anyway, you need people of intelligence on this sort of mission...quest...thing." --Pippin
"well that rules you out, Pip." --Merry -- Author: Lovin Lij

  409. The way Elrond says "Nine companions .. you shall be The Fellowship of the Ring". -- norgara1

  410. "Nine companions. So be it! You shall be the Fellowship of the ring." Elrond -- Author: Lovin Lij

  411. Of course the classic: "So, where are we going?" I also liked the part before that: Pippin: "You need people of intelligence for this mission... quest... thing..." Merry: "Well, that rules you out." -- Alquandel

  412. I loved the part when the fellowship is put together and it's all dramatic and everything, and then Pippin says "So, where are we going?" That's so funny. -- NYMetsGirl1986

  432. Setting of the musical theme "Concerning Hobbits" in a minor key, slower tempo, more "serious" orchestration, segueing into the first setting of the "Fellowship" theme (as the Fellowship first sets out) -- AFGriffith

  433. Beautiful New Zealand -- Eowyn909

  434. I liked that the Elves did not walk like humans, did not have the loping, bouncing gaits that we do, but moved smoothly and unhurried. -- ErinRua

  435. Legolas's knife thingies. -- Gr8edGouda

  436. The two swords on Legolas' back -- AvEtUw

  440. The music -- Eowyn909

  441. I loved the glimpses of hobbit-meals on the campfires ~ sausages and I don't know what all, but it sure looked yummy! -- ErinRua

  442. Merry and Pippin practicing, once again eating as they go, and wrestling with Boromir. I felt it really added to their loss when Boromir dies. His character is overwhelmingly dark and nearly untrustworthy sometimes, and this helped to show they really did know and trust him and were truly upset when he dies. Only Frodo has the reserve about Boromir. -- merithehobbit

  443. Boromir teaching Merry and Pippin to use swords. -- Alquandel

  444. Borormir teaching Merry & Pippin to fight. (not in the book but delightful) -- Eason consulting

  445. Boromir was schooling the hobbits on swordsmanship, on the mountain. Lots of little details there I liked, such as Bomorir counting out the strokes, and Aragorn bidding them to "move your feet." Then when Merry gets a sharp smack, Boromir is instantly apologetic - and is promptly bowled-over by not one but TWO rowdy little hair-foots! No, that scene is not in the book, but it gave us a glimpse of Boromir's good heart, and was just a fun moment of interaction between the hobbits and the Big Folk. -- Erin

  446. Boromir laughing as Merry and Pippin fall on him when they are practising fighting (about the only time you do see him smile) -- norgara1

  447. I love the sword-exercise-turned-wrestling-match between Boromir and the two youngest hobbits. -- ErinRua

  448. Boromir teaching the hobbits swordplay, and the characterisation of Boromir generally. I've seen some comments to the effect that he has been made too sympathetic in the film, but surely the point of the Ring is NOT that it can ensnare a weak, amoral creature like Gollum, but that it can destroy a good man who is genuinely trying to do the right thing. -- sovaysovay

  449. Merry and Pippin's sword lesson with Boromir and Aragorn -- SqrrlBane

  450. Boromir's chagrin at hurting Merry and the resulting wrestling match between the three. -- SilliMarilli

  451. The laughter of Boromir when he jokes with the hobbits. -- JudLenDia

  452. I enjoyed that Legolas was like the quiet wolfhound guarding his flock, ever-attentive to any hazard. -- Erin

  453. How Legolas leaps on a stone in order to watch out for the spying crebain. -- JudLenDia

  454. The way Legolas moves, running as gracefully as a deer, hopping onto the boulder as if he weighs next to nothing, his gliding walk at Lothlorien as he listens to the lament for Gandalf. -- Marielwing M

  455. Before the Fellowship tries to go over the Redhorn Mountain Gimli: If anybody asked my opinion(which I warrant they're not)I'd say we're taking the long way around! -- Gimli1482

  458. How Sam puts out the fire with his little pot of water right before those crebain from Dunland arrive. -- merithehobbit

  464. Boromir not-quite handling the ring. -- Idril

  465. Boromir's hypnotic speaking whilst he is holding the ring. -- norgara1

  466. I like how it kind of looks like the ring is walking along its chain when Boromir holds it up and gives his speech about how they must suffer so much for such a little thing. -- FooluvaTook

  467. On Caradhras, when Boromir is holding up the Ring, I love his startled reaction to Aragorn's second "Boromir!" It's less like he jumps and more like he almost falls over when he's brought out of his reverie. -- BunnieBugs

  468. The wavering of Boromir when he is told to give the ring back to Frodo. -- JudLenDia

  469. Frodo's very cold looking face when Boromir gives him the ring back. -- norgara1

  475. Legolas walking easily on snow while others sank -- KralovnaKrnousa

  476. When everyone was trudging through waist deep (or hobbit-high) snow Legolas just walked over it -- Meiyoshin

  477. Legolas can walk on snow, Boromir and Aragorn are carrying the frozen hobbits, and how all the beards are caked in snow on Caradhras. -- merithehobbit

  478. You know, in the scene where they're all struggling through the snow, trying to make it around the mountain, everyone keeps commenting about Legolas walking across the top of the snow. I didn't even notice that because both times I was riveted by Aragorn & Boromir carrying 2 hobbits each, just as they did in the book. I loved that they included that. -- Entowyn (K1PTOO)

  479. Aragorn and Boromir with one hobbit under each of their arms so that the Hobbits don't vanish in the snow! -- Norgara

  480. I enjoy Elijah Woods rosy cheeks in the snow scenes, and his red nose and lips as he cries. I wish I were as beautiful when I cried. -- KSandland

  482. The grunting noise that Gimli makes when he emerges from the snow. -- norgara1

  483. The way Gandalf asked Frodo to choose their path. I always see it as being for Boromir's benefit... like Gandalf is saying "This is the ringbearer. He is important. He's not a child so stop rubbing him on the head." -- Idril

  484. The way Frodo looks at Sam before he answers Gandalf's question of which they should go. -- norgara1

  486. Gandalfs huff of puzzlement as he sits down after failing tothe doors. -- norgara1

  493. Legolas' shooting -- Celebrian3

  494. Legolas, Boromir and Aragorn instantly "clicked" together as a fighting unit, when a threat emerged. -- Erin

  495. The way the warriors are ready to fight at a drop of a hat (Boromir, Aragorn, Legolas). -- Boromirrocks

  496. And Frodo's desperate cries as he is lowered to the yawning mouth of the Watcher. -- norgara1

  498. back to top

    Chapter 27 ~ Moria

  499. Probably an overall favorite thing of the movie is that it is so physical. The characters are always bumping into each other or embracing in some way, either catching each other or just plain hugging! Which also reminds me of the great emotion that is shown. There are more men in this movie than women and yet it does not suffer for truly shown affection and tears when warranted. -- Ja33in97

  500. The way that no-one seems to bother about what had just happened when they are entombed in the mines and begin walking. -- norgara1

  501. Aragorn and Boromir whipping the Watcher in the water, and after they all get trapped inside, no one seems to thank them for their actions. They just drip it off! It seems to be understood and they all are facing the long walk through Moria together. -- merithehobbit

  663. How things are light and dark in Lothlorien, blue and sad, like mourning, but light and earthy. -- merithehobbit

  664. Lothlorien music -- Celebrian3

  665. The beautiful lighting on the Fellowship as they meet Galadriel and Celebron. -- norgara1

  668. Boromir's look when Galadriel singles him out. -- norgara1

  669. In Lothlorien when Galadriel is speaking, it shows Sam's face, and you can assume she's speaking in his head too. His eyebrows rise and he looks surprised at what he hears, but then he settles back to his determined look. It's like in the book when he says that she was "offering" him the chance to go back to Hobbiton and have a little garden of his own, but he said no - he's staying with Mr. Frodo. -- MarrimOfAverone

  670. The way Galadriel and some other characters could make their eyes all big...(ie. After she says in Frodo's head: "Welcome Frodo of the Shire"..or something like that) O-O... -- OChichiriNoMikoO

  671. When Galadriel was walking down the steps and Merry and Pippins mouths were wideand eyes wide *so funny!* -- ElfArwn

  675. The pillows that everyone's heads are laying on when they are sleeping. -- norgara1

  676. Did anyone else notice the look on Aragorn's face while Boromir talking about Gondor while in Lorien? It's an understated but amazing combination of pride, longing and sadness. Like a man in exile who would dearly love to return home but he simply cannot do so. -- Culurien7

  677. Did anyone notice how Boromir started off so hostile toward Aragorn? At the Council he was contemptuous and just saw him as a rival. But every time the party stopped Aragorn would be sitting with him and listening and talking quietly to him. By the time they got to Lothlorien, Boromir was pouring his heart out to Aragorn, and the rivalry thing was totally dead. That's a King at work. -- Idril

  678. Aragorn in Lothlorien. -- elulla took1

  679. Aragorn talking to Boromir in Lothlorien, all back lit (sigh!!!) -- elulla took1

  680. Was the dialog from when Boromir and Aragorn as talking about Gondor while they sit in Lorien in the book or not? It's been a few weeks, but I think he says something like "My father is a great man but he is failing .. ) I think this shows a part of Boromir that was not in book. -- Sevilodorf

  681. The way Boromir tells Aragorn that they will both return to Gondor together and Aragorn's doubtful look. -- norgara1

Chapter 35 ~ The Great River

  700. The whole river scene is awesome. -- norgara1

  716. The way Gimli huffs and puffs when Aragorn tells him to get some rest. -- norgara1

  717. The way Legolas seems to sense the danger all along the river, and even on the shore before they are attacked. And how he mentions this to Aragorn in a hushed way, and how he was dismissed, this reminds me a lot of the book, how Aragorn chastises himself for everything going wrong. -- merithehobbit

  742. The way Frodo says in such a soft voice to Aragorn "The ring has taken Bormomir". -- norgara1

  743. And the way Aragorn looks slighly malicious as he asks "Where is the ring?". -- norgara1

  744. When Aagorn first approaches Frodo, after Frodo says "Would you destroy it?", Viggo and Elijah appear to both be standing for this particular shot seen over Viggo's shoulder. It seems really real to me, no messing around with scale issues. Later after Aragorn kneels and the shot is from behind Viggo, the perspective is the same. I don't know why, I suppose it's technically a mistake, but I love it! -- CelandineHaleth

  745. Aragorn, Aragorn, Aragorn, Aragorn talking to Frodo at Amon Hen, even if they are the same height at one point! -- elulla took1

  765. I love ALL the lighter moments of Merry and Pippin, Pip's impulsive nature ("you mean it comes in pints?") and Merry's cheerful good sense. Yet also I love their equally impulsive bravery, that sudden, snatching-it-up-from-their-socks gallantry that may or may not be entirely sensible, but it's simply who they are. -- Erin

  766. Pippin's impulsive "NO!" when Merry says that Frodo is leaving and their selflessness in offering up their lives for him. -- SilliMarilli

  767. The way the two hobbits tell Frodo to run as they face the oncoming Uruk hai, so bravely and certainly to their deaths. -- norgara1

  768. Legolas: then the rapid-fire of three arrows, using the third one to stab an orc before firing it. Not bad to kill 4 with 3 arrows, eh? -- BunnieBugs

  769. My two favorite "little things" in the movie both had to do with Legolas: when he fired three arrows in a row quite rapidly, and also when he pulled out an arrow, stabbed an orc with it, then put it on his bow and shot another orc. -- EJM637

  770. Legolas stabbing the Orc and then using the same arrow to shoot another. -- Tachachesin

  771. How Legolas whips out arrow after arrow after arrow during the final battle. -- merithehobbit

  774. Boromir's last scene was just perfect and cast perfectly. Better than the book. -- Eason consulting

  781. How Boromir just kept going, even w/three arrows in his chest! -- Bridget Chubb

  788. Merry and Pippin and their shock to Boromir being shot...and their subsequent response, and frustration at being taken. -- merithehobbit

  789. One of the last things that Boromir sees is the Merry and Pippin being carried away. -- norgara1

  790. The way you see Lurtz's legs walk towards Boromir as he moves in for the kill (horrible creature). -- norgara1

  792. The Uruk-hai's sensual cruelty as he kills Boromir. -- Idril

  793. The way Aragorn is beaten black and blue by Lurtz. -- norgara1

  794. I absolutely loved the part where Lurtz (the head Uruk-Hai) has been run through by Aragorn, and he pulls Aragorn closer and taunts him. Then Aragorn whips out the sword and slices his head clean off. The audience cheered for that scene! -- katran28

  795. Aragorn lopping off the Uruk-Hai's head -- Bridget Chubb

  796. When my hero Aragorn cuts the Uruk-hai's head off. Great stuff. -- HapEjoyEjoyE

  797. The look of disbelief on Aragorn's face after he slices Lurtz's head off. -- norgara1

  798. Aragorn looking ferocious when he fights. He gets this scary gleam in his eye. It's especially apparent during the fight with Lurtz. As he runs to Boromir he's changing gears... putting that ferocity back under control. -- Idril

Chapter 38 ~ The Departure of Boromir

  801. Finally saw Boromir's horn broken in two!! That was exciting!! -- Bridget Chubb

  802. I didn't see the blow that did it, but did anyone else notice Boromir's horn, broken in two hanging off his belt toward the end of his battle with the orcs? Then a glimpse of the horn in two parts, at his side when he is sent over the falls -- lotr42

  809. Boromir's death...that just makes me cry everytime I see it. -- Alquandel

  810. The perfect death scene with Boromir, Aragorn couldn't exude more concern and grief, more poise and comfort, more nobility and understanding than he does, it's so moving. -- merithehobbit

  811. My absolute favorite part of the movie is where Legolas walks up to Aragorn as Boromir is dying. The look on his face is simply breathtaking and heartbreaking. -- KSandland

  812. I noticed the broken horn for the first time yesterday. And I was also struck by the look on Legolas's face when he sees Aragorn leaning over the dying Boromir. There's sorrow for being too late to help, but also a kind of mystification -- dying is so unfamiliar to elves, really, and you can see it in his face. -- lorienelwyn

  813. Legolas's face when he arrived at the scene with Aragorn and the now dead Boromir. -- Norgara

  814. While he seldom emotes overtly, Legolas's facial expressions speak volumes. For instance, the loss and hurt we see, both when Gandalf falls, and when Legolas runs up - to late - to find Aragorn mourning Boromir's death. -- Erin

  815. Legolas's face when he sees that Boromir is dead. The expression is ...can't put it into words..but you all know what I mean. -- norgara1

  818. The tears on Frodo's cheeks as he stands at the River's Edge. -- norgara1

  820. Frodo's expression when he recalls Gandalf telling him that all he can do is use the time he has wisely. -- QrJspr

  821. My favorite touching scene is at the end, when Frodo stands by the lake and is making his decision. You can just read on his face his tortured thoughts before the words even come. What a perfect depiction. And when he scoops up the ring and starts for the boat...you're torn between spurring him on because you know he has to and pulling him back because you know it's just too dangerous. -- Ja33in97

  848. Gimli's "YES" when Aragorn proposes to "hunt some Orcs!" -- susdi3

  849. That little tiny lip curl Legolas pulls right after Gimli growls at the very end when they go to hunt Orc...perfect...perfect...perfect! -- merithehobbit

  850. I love how Legolas runs. The guy is like a deer! Picture him running off at the end, with Aragorn and Gimli: he's a vision of grace. -- BunnieBugs

  851. The way Frodo says "Mordor" as he looks across the land. -- norgara1

  852. My favorite little thing (maybe not so little, but hey he's a hobbit after all!) is FRODO! Don't worry, I'm not going to go on and on about how hot Elijah Wood is etc. :) I just think that he did a great job as Frodo. Especially facial expressions. At the beginning of the movie he was so happy and carefree, but after Gandalf died he totally changed, and by the end of the movie he was, like Elijah Wood described him, just a shadow of his former self. I just felt like he really brought Frodo's determination and courage to life. -- Bridget Chubb

  855. Sam's line about "Maybe we'll see them again" at the very end. -- Idril

  856. I also love the slight smile that Frodo gives Sam in that very last scene. Frodo looks so sad, and then Sam's optimistic reply about seeing the others again brings that wistful smile to his face. "I'm glad you're with me, Sam." Oh, aren't we all! -- BunnieBugs

  857. That lil gay part where Frodo says "I'm glad you're here with me" to Sam. -- HapEjoyEjoyE

    Chapter 40 ~ Credits

  859. Knowing how Sam will steal the show next year! -- Idril

  860. There's so much more... -- QrJspr

  861. So many things were just perfect little details -- ElrosPeredhil

  862. I really hope people involved with the film look at this. There are so many excellent things listed here. I think it really says a lot that fans notice the little things. Often, it's the little things that take the most effort when making a film, and they so often go unnoticed! -- katran28

  863. I thought it all was awesome, I really can' pick a fave. -- gothic genre

  864. I loved everything, and it's so amazing that all these small tiny details really do make the movie all the more better. -- Iciclecrystal

  865. I just want to see it again now!!! -- norgara1

  866. I also love the music at the end when the credits are rolling. I just sit there and let it wash over me and think ahhhh! I would love to tell eveyone to sit and listen too - but most people (in England at least) jump up and leave as soon as the credits start. Twice I have been the last person left in the cinema (wth the cleaners peering round the corner at me waiting for me to go)! -- Lorellin71450158

  867. I had a Cinema Professor tell me that if you loved a movie you should honor the people who worked so hard on it by remaining while the credits roll. I have no problem with that esp. since the music is so great! My family hates it because then they have to hang around waiting for me (poor babies, *smirk*). -- BadWargMama

  868. I love this movie -- SarBara12

  869. Worst thing: Having to wait another year for more!! -- Eason consulting
